The Waterfront

With 10,000 participants, the very successful Light Front event marked the start of the commemoration of the First World War in 2014. This year, the Province of West Flanders inaugurates the final edition of the cultural commemoration programme GoneWest with the large-scale participative project: The Waterfront on Friday 29.06.2018 from 6.00 pm to 8.30 pm.

Why a Waterfront?

In 1918, the First World War ended. Now, a century later, we come together to celebrate reconciliation, hope and the future.

Experience The Waterfront together with 6000 participants. We will create a 21-kilometre long chain from the harbour channel in Zeebrugge to the harbour channel in Ostend. Everyone holds onto a boat in the water and writes down a hopeful message for the future. Each boat will be named after someone who died at sea during the First World War.
